Why Liberal Arts Still Matter in the Age of AI
Understanding What it Means to Be Human is More Important Than Ever
In the age of AI, we’re often focused on efficiency. But what about meaning? At Lipscomb, we’ve reimagined a core curriculum grounded in ancient wisdom and modern relevance. We believe the liberal arts aren’t just alive, they’re vital to human flourishing in this unique and rapidly changing world!
What does it mean to be well, think well, live well and serve well in the 21st century? Beyond the rush to upskill and optimize, we believe students crave something deeper: the ability to ask big questions, to form convictions, to build relationships, and to lead lives of purpose. And that’s where the liberal arts come in! At Lipscomb, we’re renewing our commitment to this tradition through our new liberal arts core, Journey.
Our goal in developing Journey is to help students explore what it means to seek truth, discover beauty, know themselves and others, and flourish in their calling or vocation. Journey connects the dots between the great texts of history and the pressing issues of today. We think this is vital, because In a culture driven by rapid change, the liberal arts can ground students in enduring questions and truths, giving them a firm foundation on which to build their own understanding of the world around them and how they are uniquely gifted to love and serve our neighbors.
One question we’re often asked by parents: can the liberal arts prepare students for real jobs? Our answer: the liberal arts prepare students for real life! And in doing so, they make students adaptable, reflective, and creative and build skills like critical thinking, agile communication, and creative problem solving. These are exactly the kind of people who can thrive in every job, not just their first. And that’s what we want our work to be about at Lipscomb, equipping lifelong learners to grow in wisdom, serve with purpose, and lead with hope - today, tomorrow, and throughout their lives.
